Made Out of Babies was a post-hardcore and post-metal band from Brooklyn , New York, founded in 2005 and disbanded in 2012 .

history

Made Out of Babies were founded by Brendan Tobin, Eric Cooper, Matthew Egan and Julie Christmas for Julie Christmas' sister's birthday party. The band name came from a joke between Matthew Egan and his sister.

“I think it was a running gag between our drummer and his sister. They saw an advertisement for hand cream with a little baby on it. She quipped "this will definitely be tested on babies". He went one better and said "this is made from babies". Shortly afterwards we formed the band for Julie's sister's birthday party, and she still needed a name for the poster. Since we'd been joking about it for days anyway, we just said "Made Out Of Babies". "

- Brendan Tobin

After a week of rehearsing and the concert, the band decided to play more music together. Made Out of Babies released their debut album in 2005 on Neurot Recordings , Neurosis' house label . On the debut album, Viva Stowell took part as bassist for the songs Loosey Goosey , Gut Shoveler and Sugar , but did not stay with the band permanently. Another studio album and a split EP followed in 2006 on Neurot Recordings. For the third and final album, the band decided to switch to The End Records label to break new ground. After the release and the tour that followed, Made Out of Babies was silent for a long time. Julie Christmas released a solo album titled The Bad Wife in 2010 and announced the breakup of the band via Facebook in March 2012. Reasons for the dissolution were not made public by her or the remaining band members. The remaining musicians formed the band Bad Powers without Christmas and made their debut with a self-titled album in September 2012 on The End Records.

Made Out of Babies play a mixture of post metal, post hardcore and noise rock . Captain Chaos from the internet magazine Vampster describes the band as a “mix of NEUROSIS, THE JESUS LIZARD and UNSANE with a singer who sounds like PJ HARVEY on heroin withdrawal”. Ross Feratu, on the other hand, draws comparisons for the Ox-Fanzine with the post-hardcore artists Helmet , Shellac and Born Against . In the Internet magazine Metal.de, comparisons are also made with the noise rock band Jesus Lizard, but also with the doom metal band The Melvins and the post-hardcore band Fugazi .

In particular, Julie Christmas's vocal performance is highlighted as an important characteristic of the band in various places. She describes the Internet presence of the TV station Arte as the "screaming [...] Janis Joplin of Metal".

“[S] sing, whisper, hate, love, whine - one hundred percent life is in their songs, with all the sunny and dark sides, although one might think that the dark sides clearly predominate. The music forms the basic framework for the performance of the woman [.] "

- Captain Chaos

The guitar is described as violently tugging and screeching, while the rhythm section is named as changeable "calm and whipping". Captain Chaos describes the music as noisy, groovy and very dynamic with nasty distorted bass, dissonant guitars and angry drums. The melody is considered to be a weird choice of chords with idiosyncratic harmonies.
