Madeleine Angevine is a white wine variety . It is a new breed from a cross between the former Malingre and Madeleine Royale . Crossing took place in France in 1857 and sales began in 1863. The variety ripens around 15–20 days earlier than Gutedel and can therefore be harvested as early as the end of July in certain areas. The name Madeleine is an allusion to this time of maturity, as the name day of Magdalena falls on July 22nd. The second part of the name is derived from Angevin and means from Anjou.

The early-ripening variety is a popular table grape in northern areas , but it is rarely grown commercially. In England , Washington State and Kyrgyzstan , it is used in small quantities to make acceptable white wines . Due to its early maturity, it was often a crossbreed partner, for example with the varieties Comtessa, Forta, Noblessa, Perle von Csaba , Reichensteiner and Siegerrebe . In 1903 the Madeleine Angevine Oberlin variety was selected from a seedling .

Descent: Formerly Malingre × Madeleine Royale (according to Branas and Paul Truel )

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is densely hairy with a slightly reddish tinge on the edges. The young leaves are lightly haired.
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and strongly curved. The stalk bay is sometimes lyren-shaped open, but mostly closed with overlapping ends. The blade is serrated. The upper side of the leaf (also called the leaf blade) is blistered and coarse.
  • The cylindrical grape is small to medium-sized and has loose berries. The elongated berries are large and yellowish-whitish in color. The berries are thin-skinned.

Earlier Malingre ripens almost 15–20 days before the Gutedel . It is therefore considered to ripen very early. The variety forms purely female flowers and is only moderately bearing due to the associated irrigation . Due to their unpleasant taste, the berries are only suitable for direct consumption to a limited extent.
