Magdalena of Brandenburg (1582–1616)
Magdalena von Brandenburg (born January 7, 1582 in Berlin ; † May 4, 1616 in Darmstadt ) was a princess of Brandenburg and, by marriage, Landgravine of Hesse-Darmstadt .
Life
Magdalena from the House of Hohenzollern was a daughter of the Brandenburg Elector Johann Georg (1525–1598) from his marriage to Elisabeth (1563–1607), daughter of Prince Joachim Ernst von Anhalt . Shortly after the death of her father, she quietly married Landgrave Ludwig V of Hessen-Darmstadt (1577–1627) in Berlin on June 5, 1598 , to whom she had become engaged the year before.
Magdalena died shortly after taking part in the Naumburg Princes' Congress in 1616. She was buried in the city church of Darmstadt . The death of his wife hit Ludwig so hard that he went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land between 1618 and 1619 , which made him suspect of wanting to convert to Catholicism.
Magdalena left numerous volumes of theological and historical content to the Hessian State Library .
