geography

In front of Newport Bay, the four-mile (6.5 km) long Balboa Peninsula extends protectively from the Pacific Ocean . At the southern end of the peninsula there is a narrow opening to the sea, which ships have to cross on their way into the bay. On the opposite side of the passage is Corona del Mar State Beach , which is ideal for swimming and sunbathing.

In the middle of the bay there are several islands that were created by landfills and are connected to the mainland by road bridges. The largest is Balboa Island , which can also be reached by the Balboa Island Ferry . The elongated Lido Isle protrudes far into Newport Bay.

At the northern head end, the road bridge of California State Route 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) forms the dividing line to Upper Newport Bay . The northern part of the bay extends further inland to the city limits of Irvine . There the canalized San Diego Creek flows into the water. Unlike the lower part of the bay, Upper Newport Bay is a designated nature reserve and is therefore a retreat for numerous animal and plant species.

The bay is surrounded by dense buildings on all sides. Waterways that are reminiscent of the canal system in Venice run through the residential areas . Many properties therefore have their own moorings. Around 9,000 boats of all types are anchored in the water. The city's ten yacht clubs are all located on Newport Bay.

history

The history of the bay is closely linked to the development of Newport Harbor .

From angespültem sand built near the mouth of the Santa Ana River , the Balboa Peninsula . The peninsula grew to half its present length by 1857 and began to obscure Newport Bay. Around 1900 William S. Collins recognized the tourist potential of the landscape. The businessman had the artificial Balboa Island built up. In 1923, WK Parkinson bought a sandbar in the bay, which he later expanded into the Lido Isle .

From the 1930s investments were made to expand Newport Harbor. A pier was built at the southern end of the peninsula . After a year of construction, the port facilities were inaugurated in 1935. In May 1936, the then US President Franklin D. Roosevelt opened a radio station.
