Martin Onnasch

Martin Onnasch (born May 20, 1944 in Köslin ) is a German Protestant theologian . From 1996 to 2009 he was professor of church history at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald .

Life

Martin Onnasch comes from a Pomeranian pastor family. His father Fritz Onnasch and his grandfather Friedrich Onnasch were active in the Confessing Church during the National Socialist rule ; both were killed by Soviet soldiers in 1945.

Onnasch grew up in Magdeburg after the Second World War . He was denied admission to high school. He did a three-year apprenticeship as a skilled worker and then attended the Church Proseminar in Naumburg (Saale) , where he passed the Abitur in 1964. He then studied theology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg .

From 1974 to 1979 he was pastor in Osterweddingen . In 1979 he was with a thesis on the church struggle in the province of Saxony to Dr. theol. PhD. From 1979 to 1993 he was a lecturer, later professor at the "Catechetic Upper Seminar" and at the Naumburg Church College that emerged from this . After its dissolution in 1993, Onnasch became a professor at the Erfurt University of Education . In addition, from 1994 to 1997 he was deputy director of the Hannah Arendt Institute for Research on Totalitarianism in Dresden .

From 1996 to 2009 he was Professor of Church History at the Theological Faculty of the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald, which had been in existence since 1815 . He is a member of the Historical Commission for Pomerania .
