Magnus Pelkowski (born August 13, 1965 in Bogotá , Colombia ) is a former German- Colombian basketball player . Pelkowski is considered the first player with German citizenship to win a championship in the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship in the United States . After completing his studies, he played for a few years as a professional in the German basketball league . He now lives in western Mecklenburg and works as a landscape designer and freelance artist.

Career

Pelkowski went from his native country to study in the USA and got a sports scholarship at Indiana University through the contacts of his trainer with the well-known college trainer Bobby Knight . After an opening season with 15 appearances in the Hoosiers called basketball team of the university, he was not registered for the squad of the team in the second season. In 1986 he was reactivated by the military drill value coach Knight for the basketball squad and in the end the team won the college championship in 1987 with Pelkowski, who got little playing time as a supplementary player. After two more years in the Hoosiers squad, in which his shares hardly increased , Pelkowski graduated from the States in 1989.

In 1989 he got a professional contract in his parents' home country and played in Ulm for SSV 1846 in the BBL. For the 1990/91 season he first returned to the Ulm team, but was suspended in the first game of the season after an attack on a referee. The following season he was directed by coach Terence Schofield to Bamberg , where he and the team won the 1992 cup, the first national title for this club. He then played for SG Braunschweig in the BBL. A serious shoulder injury, which he suffered in a duel with Olaf Blab , the brother of his former teammate at the Hoosiers Uwe Blab , let him end his basketball career.
