Mahzarin R. Banaji
Mahzarin Rustum Banaji (* 1956 in Secunderabad ) is an Indian - American social psychologist . She holds a professorship for social ethics at Harvard University named after Richard Clarke Cabot (1868–1939, doctor and pioneer of social work ) .
Banaji and colleagues developed the Implicit Association Test . Banaji's work is considered to be groundbreaking for the understanding of stereotypes , their neural correlate , their development in childhood and their function in maintaining existing systems (system justification theory) . She explores unconscious perceptions and their influence on attitudes towards members of outgroups as well as the quasi-automatic processes of prejudice .
Mahzarin Banaji earned a bachelor's degree in English and Philosophy from Nizam College in 1976 and a master's degree in general psychology from Osmania University (both in Hyderabad ) in 1978 . Further degrees are a Master’s degree in 1982 (Cognitive models of the self: Evidence for an encoding centrality principle) and a Ph.D. in 1985/1986. (Affect and memory: An experimental investigation) in social psychology with Anthony Greenwald at Ohio State University . As a postdoctoral fellow , she worked with Claude M. Steele and Elizabeth F. Loftus at the University of Washington . In 1986 Banaji received a professorship at Yale University , where she was the successor to Ruth Barcan Marcus Reuben-Post-Halleck Professor of Psychology. She has been at Harvard University since 2002, from 2002 to 2008 she was also at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study , and since 2011 she has also been at the Santa Fe Institute .
In 2015, Banaji published Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People with Anthony Greenwald . It has (as of July 2019) an h-index of 90.
