The Main Bridge Marktheidenfeld is a road bridge that spans the Main at river kilometers 179.79 . The building near Marktheidenfeld was built in 1846 as part of a road connection from Würzburg to Aschaffenburg. It was the first Main Bridge between Würzburg and Aschaffenburg and is part of Bundesstraße 8 .

Since 2002 there has been a second crossing of the Main with the north bridge Marktheidenfeld . As part of the northern bypass, it relieves the old Main bridge.

history

As a result of the Congress of Vienna , Lower Franconia with the Grand Duchy of Würzburg and the Principality of Aschaffenburg became part of the new Kingdom of Bavaria in 1815 . In order to better develop the new parts of the country, the road connection between Würzburg and Aschaffenburg was expanded under King Ludwig I. For this purpose, a fixed Main crossing should also be built to replace the ford or ferry connection at Lengfurt . Ludwig's condition, who approved the construction himself, was “that the stones of this bridge should be hewn like the ancient Roman blocks”. After lengthy discussions and disputes between the main communities regarding the route, the royal government in Würzburg decided in December 1835 to build the Main Bridge in Marktheidenfeld. The decisive factor in this decision in favor of Marktheidenfeld was the more suitable building site and the simpler road layout down into the Main Valley. The great importance of the building for the further development of the city is made clear by the inclusion of the bridge image in the city arms. The star is supposed to symbolize the lucky star that shone through the bridge over the city. On January 29, 1846, the Main Bridge was inaugurated. The construction costs for the natural stone arch bridge were 460,000 guilders , ten years earlier 265,000 guilders had been estimated. On August 23, 1896, a monument was unveiled at the western bridgehead, showing King Ludwig I as the builder of the bridge. This bronze bust was delivered in 1940 as an "Adolf Hitler donation" for arms production and melted down.

In the Illustrierte Zeitung from Leipzig, the bridge was described in 1845 as follows: “It is built entirely from ashlar stones of red sandstone in Roman style and the grandeur of the building is so easy and pleasing to the less educated visitor It is understandable that the reporter, who has already opposed some such works, does not think he is saying too much when he claims that this bridge is one of the most beautiful that have been built in recent times. "

On April 2, 1945, two arches of the bridge were blown up by German troops. A year later they were restored , this time in concrete . In 1953 and 1954, the 0.5 m wide stone parapets on both sides were replaced by cantilevered concrete caps and steel railings. This made it possible to widen the carriageway from 6.1 m to 7.0 m and the sidewalks on both sides from 1.0 m to 1.4 m. The last major repair was carried out in 1980 for 1.8 million DM.

The stone arch bridge , which is straight in plan, has seven openings, all of which are designed as segment arches with a clear width of 23.6 m and an arrow height of 4.6 m. The pillars are around 3.6 m wide at the top, resulting in a pillar axis spacing of 27.2 m.

Red Main sandstone was used to build the bridge . The pillar masonry at the bottom consists of ashlar masonry in varying layers. The arched masonry has regular layer heights and is 1.1 m thick at the top and 1.5 m thick at the fighters. The two arches, which were destroyed in the war, are made of concrete and clad with natural stone. The abutments and the first eastern pillar have a flat foundation on the adjacent rock. The remaining five pillars are founded on oak stakes 25 cm in diameter.

With a maximum clearance height of 6.00 m at the highest navigable water level, the bridge is one of the low bridges on the Main.

Since the bridge piers are not sufficiently stable against ship impact and damage to the natural stone or concrete arches, the roadway as well as to the caps and railings, a bridge repair is planned. In October 2013 the State Building Authority announced that the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration insisted on widening the passage, which was only possible with the removal of the central arch of the bridge. The city council of Marktheidenfeld unanimously rejected this in its meeting on December 5, 2013 and again at the meeting on April 14, 2016. The bridge is not only a listed building, but is a point of identification for citizens, the silhouette is a central part of the city's coat of arms. However, due to the responsibilities for federal waterways , the decision rests solely with the responsible Federal Ministry for Transport and Digital Infrastructure . An internet petition on the Change.org platform reached more than 1,500 supporters against the demolition of the central pillar by July 2016. A total of 5,300 supporters signed for the preservation of the pillar.
