Maius
In the ancient Roman calendar , Maius was initially the third month of the year of office and the forerunner of May . It is named after the Greek goddess Maia , daughter of the Titan Atlas , who can be identified with the Roman goddess of fertility Bona Dea , whose festival was celebrated in May. In return, the Roman poet Ovid derives a different etymology, according to which the month is named after the maiores , the "elderly", and the following month, June, after the iuniores , the "young men" (Fasti VI.88) and the Etruscan month Amphilus corresponds.
In 153 BC Chr. Was the beginning of the year in office on January 1 laid, which is why the month Maius moved in the Official year to the fifth place. The calendar reform of Gaius Iulius Caesar left Maius from 45 BC. In the Julian calendar with 31 days in the same length.
