The Februarius is the forerunner of today's month in February . In the Roman calendar it was originally the underworld month and was in twelfth position in the year of office. It gets its name from the Latin word februare ( atonement , purify ).

When 153 BC Chr. Moved the beginning of the year of office to January 1st, February became the second month of the year of office. With the calendar reform of Gaius Iulius Caesar , from 45 BC Chr. An additional day inserted in each leap year .
