Augustus (Julian calendar)

Augustus

The Augustus is the eighth month of the Julian calendar and forerunner of today's month August .

The forerunner of Augustus in the Julian calendar was the sextilis in the Roman calendar . Since the Roman calendar initially began with Martius (March), the sextilis was then the sixth month, as its name suggests. Not until 153 BC BC the beginning of the year was brought forward by two months and Sextilis became the eighth month, whereby the relationship between names and counts disappeared. In the Roman calendar (a bound lunar calendar ) the sextilis had a length of 29 days. After the calendar reform of Gaius Iulius Caesar around 45 BC. BC - and the related changeover to the Julian solar calendar - the sextilis had 31 days. The renaming in the name Augustus was in the year 8 BC. Since Augustus had taken up his first consulate in that month .
