Maixent Coly
Maixent Coly (born September 10, 1949 in Affiniam , Ziguinchor , † August 24, 2010 in Dakar ) was a Senegalese theologian and Roman Catholic bishop of Ziguinchor .
Life
After graduating from the Collège Sacré Cœur in Dakar, Maixent Coly studied law at the University of Dakar from 1971 to 1974. In 1974/75 he was a teacher at the Didier-Marie de Saint-Louis College . In 1975 he entered the seminary in Koumi in Upper Volta, today Burkina Faso , and studied philosophy and theology from 1975 to 1980. He was ordained a priest on December 30, 1980 . He was then a teacher at the Petit Séminaire Saint-Louis in Ziguinchor and secretary to the Bishop of Ziguinchor. From 1983 to 1987 he studied at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and was then Professor of Sacred Scripture at the Seminary in Djibélor-Brin.
Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor bishop in the diocese of Ziguinchor in 1993. He was ordained bishop on December 11, 1993 by Augustin Sagna , incumbent bishop of Ziguinchor; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Korhogo on the Ivory Coast , Auguste Nobou , and Pierre Eyt , Archbishop of Bordeaux . In 1995 he was appointed bishop of Ziguinchor.
After a long illness, he died of a stroke in the Hôpital Principal in Dakar.
Coly campaigned for peace in the Casamance region ( Casamance conflict ) in order to put a stop to the military conflict between the government of Senegal and the Mouvement des forces démocratiques de la Casamance (MFDC) , which has been going on since 1990 . Maixent Coly initiated the 2001, 2002 and 2003 peace agreements.
