Mako - Simply Mermaid (Original title: Mako: Island of Secrets , also Mako Mermaids ) is an Australian youth series by Jonathan M. Shiff and a spin-off from H 2 O - Suddenly Mermaid . The series has been produced by Ship's production company Jonathan M. Shiff Productions in collaboration with ZDF Enterprises since 2012 . It is about the adventures of the fifteen-year-old merman Zac Blakely and the mermaids Sirena, Nixie and Lyla or in the 2nd and 3rd seasons Sirena, Ondina and Mimmi. The first episode was broadcast on July 26, 2013 by the Australian television station Network Ten , while the German-language first broadcast took place on September 28, 2013 on ZDF .

action

The series is about three mermaids in three seasons, who normally live in the water, but have different adventures on land and in the water.

season 1

The first season tells of the three mermaids Lyla, Nixie and Sirena who accidentally made Zac a merman. To take his strength from him again, they try to live a normal life on land, which is not so easy for the three of them.

The three mermaids Lyla, Nixie Sirena and live in a swarm near the island Mako Iceland . During a full moon night , they are assigned to guard the Mondsee , a magical crater lake on Mako Island, and to make sure that no one enters the island. Still, they allow teenage boy Zac Blakely and his best friend Cam to camp on the island.

When Zac wants to meet a need on the night of the full moon, he discovers a light and the rock wall opens into a cave with a trident symbol inside. When he touches the symbol, the ground liquefies and he falls into the moon lake between the perplexed mermaids. He passes out and the mermaids dump him on the beach. With a memory gap, Zac and his friend return to the mainland. The next day, Zac finds that he can control water and transforms into a merman when exposed to water. He initiates Cam and decides to keep his skills a secret.

At the same time, the mermaids get in trouble, as the swarm sees a merman as a serious security threat. Lyla, Nixie and Sirena are therefore expelled from the group and the swarm fled the waters of Mako Island. The three decide that their only chance to rehabilitate themselves is to go ashore and take Zac's strength back. However, you need to quickly realize that this is not that easy at all and you only have a vague approach on how to do it. You meet the school principal Rita Santos, who also turns out to be a mermaid, and who left the crush years ago because of her husband, who has since passed away. Rita lets the three live with her as her nieces. She later teaches Lyla, Nixie and Sirena a kind of private lesson about mermaids.

Lyla, Nixie, and Sirena learn about life on land and continue to try to steal Zac's powers. Due to his new characteristics, he is completely focused on himself without noticing that his girlfriend Evie is surprised at his behavior. Zac neglects her more and more without realizing it. There are always arguments between him and Cam because of the fishtail. Cam criticizes Zac for being overly concerned with his merman ability, while Zac believes that Cam is jealous of him and that he would like to be a merman himself. Eventually there is a break between the two.

Lyla, Nixie, and Sirena take advantage of these arguments to befriend Zac. Due to a mishap, he reveals himself to the three of them as a merman, without realizing that they are mermaids. The three of them discover that Zac behaves unusually during a full moon, which makes him fixate more obstinately on his goals. In addition, the full moon seems to give him new strength, as he can now make himself invisible after his first full moon night. Rita concludes that Zac with Mako Iceland connected is.

Meanwhile, Sirena falls in love with David, the owner of the Ocean Cafe . There she starts as a singer. But Carly also has an eye on him, but later realizes that David is interested in Sirena.

Later on, Lyla and Zac get to know each other better. Lyla falls in love with him. The two go to Mako together to learn more about Zac's transformation. Zac finds the entrance to the cave again. There he discovers a portal made of water, through which he walks and sees a trident . But he leaves the cave before he can grab the trident. He investigates it and learns that the trident can be used to rule over all mermaids and mermaids. The mermaids also investigate and learn from Rita that many years ago a group of mermen with the trident came to Mako and stole all of the mermaids' strength. The mermaids were able to defeat the mermen with the help of the ocean and have hidden the trident. The three agree that they must keep Zac away from the trident.

Zac, on the other hand, who doesn't know the full truth about the trident, is fascinated by the power of a trident. On Zac's second full moon night, he falls under the spell of the moon and swims to Mako. There he goes through the portal again and wants to get the trident. However, he is stopped by Lyla and realizes that she, Nixie and Sirena are mermaids. He is disappointed and breaks with them. Instead, he turns back to Cam, with whom he develops a pronounced distrust of the mermaids. When Rita asks Zac about his bad grades, he finds out that Rita is also a mermaid and blackmailed her with his knowledge. However, Nixie, Lyla and Sirena stand by Rita. He must recognize that he is inferior to the three and keep their secrets. Cam does not understand this in turn. Even so, he promises Zac to continue helping him get the trident. The two succeed in this on Zac's third full moon night. They trick the three mermaids and Zac grabs the trident.

At the same time, Evie realizes that Rita, Lyla, Nixie, and Sirena have some secret in common. She researches and feels them down. In doing so, however, Rita put her in her place.

The mermaids are now trying to get the trident back. In doing so, however, they must realize that Zac with the trident is more powerful than them. This in turn develops a feeling of superiority towards them. They learn from Rita that if the trident comes into the moon lake during the full moon on Mako, it and the power source of the mermaids will be destroyed forever.

Finally the three manage to take the trident and hide it. But Zac and Cam, who systematically look for the hiding place, soon manage to find the hiding place of the trident and take it back. Lyla gets in their way and a fight ensues between her and Zac, in which she is seriously injured by the magic of the trident. Zac realizes how dangerous the trident is. He rescues Lyla and, after she tells him the whole truth about the trident, brings the trident back to the portal.

The group relationships change as a result: While Zac trusts Sirena and especially Lyla again, Cam, who was enthusiastic about the power of the trident, questions his friendship with him. Nixie, on the other hand, is skeptical whether Zac's free decision and turning back into a human is really enough to protect the trident from Zac. She confides in Cam, who in turn returns her trust, although he continues to think of the trident. When Lyla thinks about not taking the powers away from Zac but adding them to their crush, Cam and Nixie decide to work together to take the powers away from Zac.

In truth, however, Cam is trying to become a merman himself. To do this, however, he needs the trident that he wants to get together with Nixie. Evie, trying to find out what's wrong with Zac, joins them. While Cam gets the trident, Evie is in danger. She has to be rescued by Zac, Lyla, Sirena and Nixie and thus learns that Zac and the three sea men are. The friends continue to quarrel as each insists she did the right thing. When Lyla overhears a conversation between Cam and Evie, in which he warns Evie, who is already unsettled by Zac's revelation, about the mermaids, she is convinced of her position. The three discover that Cam is actually playing a double game, destroying the Mondsee and wanting to become a merman himself. Zac and Evie also get behind Plan Cams and Zac and the mermaids go to Mako to stop him. There it comes to a fight between the four and Cam when the moon is full, in which Zac swims into the moon lake when the moon is full, destroys the trident and thus prevents Cam's plan.

As thanks for their courage, Lyla, Nixie and Sirena receive their moon rings from Rita. Zac discovers that despite the full moon bath, he is still a merman. He makes up with his girlfriend Evie, who in turn makes up with the three mermaids. The season ends when Cam swears revenge on the beach.

season 2

In the second season, Sirena and her new friends Mimmi and Ondina continue to try to minimize the dangers posed by mermen.

The fight against Cam at the end of season one reconciled Lyla, Nixie, and Sirena and the crush. Still, the Mermaid Council, led by the mermaid Veridia, insists that the Meerman Zac continues to pose a threat at the end of the first season, despite his vote of confidence. For this reason, Lyla and Nixie, along with other mermaids, are looking for a new place to live for the mermaids who have lived in the open sea since the first season. The two mermaids Ondina and Mimmi, however, do not want to leave Mako. They hope that their greater experience will help them transform Zac back and go ashore with Sirena. Meanwhile, Zac and his girlfriend Evie are enjoying their lives while their friendship with Cam is broken.

For the first attempt to transform Zac back, Zac is supposed to bathe in the moon lake during the seventh cycle of the moon during a full moon. But due to mistakes in agreement, Evie is afraid for her boyfriend. She tries to protect Zac by swimming in the moon lake when the moon is full and also becoming a mermaid. Ondina and Mimmi first try to undo this, but soon afterwards they classify the danger from mermen as greater and concentrate again on Zac. Meanwhile, Zac has strange dreams about a chamber on Mako. Together with Sirena, Ondina and Mimmi, he researches and finds a magically hidden cave that can only be entered through the full moon or with the help of moon rings. It contains a kind of temple in which various signs are embedded, with the help of which the chamber can be operated and magical powers can be released. Rita, Sirena, Ondina and Mimmi conclude that the temple belonged to the mermen before the mermaids took the island and that it was built to steal the mermaids' powers and destroy the moon lake.

At the same time Erik starts a job as a waitress in the Ocean Café. He finds the girls strange and watches them. In doing so, he discovers the secret of Ondina and turns out to be Meerman. However, he's seen as a lesser threat than Zac. Instead, Erik and Ondina get closer and begin a relationship later in the season. Meanwhile, little by little, all the mermaids discover his secret, and Cam befriends him. Zac, who wants to research how the temple works, begins to work with him.

In the further course, Mimmi and Zac notice that they have the same visions of each other. On a full moon night, Zac and Erik want to explore the temple again. However, they are stopped by Rita, Ondina, Mimmi, and the chairman of the council of mermaids Veridia. Veridia and Rita explain that Zac is the son of the mighty mermaid Nerissa and brother of Mimmi and that his sea-man skills were only suppressed by a spell. This also explains why the previous anti-reverse spells that were aimed at humans were ineffective. Veridia wants to attack Zac, but Rita, Ondina and Mimmi oppose her.

In the further course Veridia Ondina reveals that the council of mermaids does not see the danger primarily in Zac, but in the possibility that Zac could activate the chamber. If this can be ruled out, the swarm wants to return. Ondina first tries to turn the power of the chamber against itself during the full moon in order to destroy it. Instead, Zac, Eric and the three mermaids find out that the chamber can only be activated with the trident. This makes it clear to Zac that the Chamber's powers are dangerous. He and Eric are therefore stopping their investigations. Since the trident was destroyed at the end of the first season, the council of mermaids decides that their return is no longer a threat and they begin to prepare.

Later on, Evie's best friend Carly discovers the secret and starts a relationship with Cam. In addition, Zac and Cam become friends again. Mimmi also sees Erik as a danger and questions the relationship between him and Ondina.

After Erik lost his job at the Ocean Café, he learns from Cam that the trident was broken, but that the mermaids are keeping the magical stone inside. He resumes investigating the chamber and tries to persuade Zac and Cam to look for the stone together, but they refuse. Instead, he goes looking for the stone himself and finds it in Rita's house. When Zac gets in his way, he uses the powers of the former trident, whereby Zac remains Meerman, but loses his magical powers. Erik makes his way to Mako to finally open the chamber, as he believes this is the only way to learn the truth about the temple. Ondina tries to change his mind, but unsuccessfully. Together with Zac, Sirena, Mimmi and Evie, she takes up the chase. After Erik has activated the chamber with the stone, it removes the water from the Mondsee. The born mermaids Rita, Ondina, Mimmi and Sirena, but also Zac become weaker and collapse. Erik realizes that the chamber actually has the postulated effect. He tries to remove the stone of the trident to deactivate the chamber, but is thrown back. Thereupon the weakened Zac tries to remove the stone, since he is a descendant of the builder. He manages, but is killed in the process. With the help of the stone of the trident he can be reanimated again. This last remnant of the trident crumbles, becomes ineffective and no longer poses any danger.

Ondina separates from Erik because she no longer trusts him. This then leaves the city. Sirena lets David in on her mermaid secret. The season ends with the addition of Zac and Evie to the crush and their return to Mako Island.

season 3

In addition to Ondina and Mimmi, the third season is mainly about the Asian mermaid Weilan and the fight against a kite made of water that threatens the swarm.

At the beginning of the third season, the mermaid Weilan , who usually lives in Shanghai and on land, is introduced. While she is out as a mermaid for once on a full moon night, she is threatened by a kite made of water. Her grandmother then sends her to the southern swarm on Mako Island, where she is quartered with Rita. Weilan makes friends in particular with the few sea people living on land in the southern flock. She learns that Ondina is native, Mimmi grew up in the North Swarm and that Zac and Evie grew up on land. In addition to them, she also meets Cam, David and Carly. Ondina has been appointed teacher at the mermaid school. Sirena is vacationing in Hawaii with her sister Aquata during the third season.

Already at the first full moon the five realize that the dragon has followed Weilan. You notice that he is resisting attempts at defense by the moon rings and learn that the dragon transformed Weilan's swarm, the eastern swarm, into humans or drove them ashore years ago. Together with Veridia they are working on a solution. But between the full moons they have enough time to get to know some of the magical techniques of the Eastern Swarms that are unknown to them together with Weilan.

Weilan teaches Zac a technique with which he can throw attack spells back on the attacker. He hopes that the strength of a merman compared to the mermaids is great enough to reverse the fire of the dragon so that it is transformed back. When the dragon appears at the full moon, Zac can use the defense spell, but the dragon remains undamaged. Instead, Evie, who is afraid for her boyfriend, tries to protect him. She attacks the dragon with the power of her moon ring, but the dragon defends itself against her and Evie loses her mermaid existence. The mermaids first try to give her back her mermaid existence. However, Evie soon begins to see it as a positive thing to be able to come into contact with water without any problems and decides to dive conventionally again. Weilan, on the other hand, sees no way out of defeating the dragon. She is depressed and finds help from the Chinese antique dealer Shen, who gives her moral support and whose shop also sells magical antiques.

In the further course of the series, among other things, Cam takes over the café. Mimmi also begins a relationship with the dolphin trainer Chris, whom she had already met in the second season.

In episode 65, Mimmi (and her brother Zac with the help of visions from Mimmi) have several apparitions of their mother Nerissa. You learn that a few years ago Nerissa fought against a rebellious mermaid named Aurora, first in the north and later in the east, and thus achieved great fame. After a fight against Aurora, she disappeared without a trace. Mimmi tries to intensify the visions with the help of her moon ring, but only the water dragon appears, which also remains peaceful towards Mimmi. While the former can be explained with the moon power stored in the moon ring, the latter raises questions.

In the further course, Rita realizes that she spends little time in the water because of her job as headmistress. She quits and instead gets Ondina's job at the mermaid school.

In episode 67, Rikki Chadwick, known from H 2 O - Suddenly Mermaid , appears as an adult, famous, successful book author with an exhibition of treasures recovered from the sea. The three discover that Ms. Chadwick has recovered the treasure from unusually great depths. They particularly notice a gold bracelet with which, according to the legend of Jiao Long, a water spirit is said to have defeated a dragon. They investigate Shen and discover that the bracelet belonged to a mermaid. From this they conclude that Ms. Chadwick could possibly be a mermaid. You learn the history of the H 2 O series and find out that Rikki transforms in the Mondsee and until now had no knowledge of any born mermaids.

Later on, Zac also receives visions from his mother. Weilan also states that the legend of Jiao Long was about a country boy. He was cursed by a crush in a water dragon because he fell in love with a mermaid from another crush. With this transformation the other crush was to be punished until the boy could be freed with the help of the bracelet. They conclude that the water dragon is the enchanted Nerissa. Since Veridia wants to keep trying to meet the water spirit with moon rings, they turn to Rikki. Finally, the mermaids and Rikki, together with their magical powers, steal the bracelet from the holdings of Rikki's foundation. With the help of the bangle Mimmi can transform Nerissa back.

The series ends with Mimmi telling Chris the secret and Zac introducing his mother to his foster family, Ondina wants to rebuild the eastern crush with Weilan and Rikki and her friends want to get to know the crush.

Main venues

The action takes place in Mako Island's Moon Lake, the fictional volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean near Australia's coast taken from H 2 O , in Rita's and Zac's house, and in the Ocean Café, a popular café run by David and Joe (David's brother ) to be led. Under Rita's house there are 2 caves, one with sea access and in the other cave Rita has made herself comfortable. She stores treasures and magical tinctures from the sea there. Classes also take place there. From the house you can enter the caves through a bookshelf with a cat flap for Poseidon (Rita's cat).

The series takes place on the Australian Gold Coast .

production

In July 2011 the production of a spin-off from H 2 O - Suddenly Mermaid was announced. A first season with 26 episodes and a possible 90-minute fictional film were ordered. A budget of more than 12.3 million Australian dollars was available for the realization of the first season . Filming of the first season began on May 8th and ended on October 12th, 2012.

Even before the first season was broadcast, a second season was commissioned and will be broadcast in spring 2015. In January 2014 it was announced that filming would begin in the spring and that Lucy Fry and Ivy Latimer had also left the series. On the same day, Isabel Durant , Allie Bertram and Alex Cubis were cast for new leading roles. The season 2 budget was $ 12.15 million.

Before the second season was broadcast, a third season of 16 episodes was ordered for 2016. Filming for the season began on April 10, 2015. Linda Ngo and Taylor Glockner were hired for new lead roles, while Alex Cubis and Amy Ruffle will not be returning to the series. Glockner joined the series at the end of the second season. At the beginning of July 2015 it was announced that Cariba Heine will slip again into the role of Rikki Chadwick , who she played in H 2 O - Suddenly Mermaid from 2006 to 2010 .

Mermaids in the series

The magic of the mermaids essentially corresponds to the magic of the mermaids in H 2 O - Suddenly Mermaid in the third season. However, the mermaids have a lot more powers at once. As in H 2 O, most of these forces only exist as long as a hand movement is sustained. With the help of herbs, special hand movements or the moon ring, permanent magic can also be created. A new and one of the most important hand movements offers the possibility of making yourself invisible. Among a large number of mostly rare magical objects, the most important and widespread is the moon ring, a small ring with a blue-transparent stone that is worn on the finger. It is distributed to the mermaids as part of a ritual at a young age and stores the light of the full moon, with which they can produce more powerful and long-lasting spells.

The naturally occurring mermaids live in a small number of groups of female individuals called "schools". The north, east and south swarms are mentioned in the series. Different cultures have formed within the swarms and the use of different magic has been established. The exchange between the swarms seems to be rather low.

The southern swarm dealt with in the series is led by a council of elders, which among other things organizes basic training. He has high authority and expects absolute obedience, but usually gives the mermaids a lot of freedom in their daily routine. Several main characters in the series are expelled from the swarm due to disobeying orders. (Which is reversed every time.) It is suggested that this attitude also applies between the swarms: In the legend of Jiao Long, a swarm transforms a human boy into a water dragon in order to send another swarm for a love affair with this boy punish. In the series, the council of the southern flock is often represented by a person, Veridia, who makes decisions on behalf of the council, often at very short notice.

For a long time, the southern flock lived in isolation from country people and most mermaids never turn into humans even today. Rita's decision to continue her life on land a few years before the series was set to take place caused dislocations between her and the Mermaid Council. On land, as in H 2 O , mermaids can use their strength to defend themselves against the dangers of water and, in an emergency, escape by jumping into the water.

The mystery of procreation is only dealt with very vaguely. Apparently, real mermaids hatch from something like eggs or pods like sharks. Mermen are apparently not involved in this.

The problem of the moon lake, which was destroyed at the end of H 2 O, is no longer discussed. The Mondsee looks different this time. It is bordered with curbs and has sun beds.
