Maksat Atabaýew (born December 28, 1994 in Ashgabat ; with the World Chess Federation FIDE Maksat Atabayev ) is a Turkmen chess player who holds the title of Grand Master . With an Elo rating of 2475 (as of March 2020) Atabaýew is one of the best chess players in the country.

Career

In 2010 Atabaýew was awarded the title of FIDE Master (FM) by FIDE . In the same year Atabaýew took part in the 2010 Chess Olympiad as part of the Turkmen team . He got 5.5 points from ten games and was able to increase his Elo rating significantly. In 2012 Atabaýew was named International Master (IM) and in the same year played the Chigorin Memorial , where he finished 76th in the field of 350 participants with 5.5 points from nine games. In addition, he was again part of the Turkmen team at the 2012 Chess Olympiad , where he once again achieved a good result with 7.5 points from ten games, including a win at the tournament against the Austrian grandmaster Dawit Schengelia . In 2013 Atabaýew took part in the Summer Universiade and finished the tournament in Kazan, Russia, in 27th place.

At a tournament in Chengdu , China, Atabaýew fulfilled the last grandmaster norm in April 2015, making him the fifth Turkmen chess player to receive this title. He has represented his country regularly at the Chess Olympiad since 2010, and Atabaýew played on the first board of the Turkmen team at the tournaments in 2016 and 2018 . In 2016 he met the world-class players Sergei Karjakin and Teymur Rəcəbov , where he drew with the white pieces against the latter . In 2018 he lost only one of ten games and finished the tournament with 6.5 points.

In addition to his career as a chess player, Atabaýew is occasionally active as a referee at tournaments in his native Turkmenistan.
