Malibu-Newton Canyon Valley AVA (recognized since June 13, 1996) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is in the Los Angeles County administrative area . The area is located within Newton Canyon , a valley within the Santa Monica Mountains just 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean . The mostly forested valley is still within the parish limits of Malibu . In 1987 it was George Rosenthal who planted the first vineyards in this area again since Prohibition . In addition, the small wine-growing region was declared a protected designation of origin at his instigation in 1996 .
The valley floor is between 430 m (1400 ft) and 850 m (2800 ft) above sea level. NN . Morning coastal fog and cooling sea breezes ensure a moderate microclimate and thus enable the cultivation of the grape varieties customary in Bordeaux and Chardonnay in an otherwise too hot environment.
