South Coast AVA (recognized since November 21, 1985) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the western, coastal part of the three administrative areas Los Angeles County , Orange County and San Diego County between the cities of Los Angeles in the north and San Diego on the Mexican border in the south. This large area was divided into a number of smaller sub-regions in order to take account of the terroir concept. However, the common denominator of all sub-regions is that the hot climate is moderate due to the proximity to the coast of the Pacific Ocean .

In the three American Viticultural Areas South Coast, Central Coast AVA and North Coast AVA , all of California's coastal wine-growing regions are combined.
