San Pasqual Valley AVA (recognized since September 23, 1981) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is in the administrative area of San Diego County . The area is the fourth oldest American Viticultural Area (Protected Designation of Origin ) in the United States. Due to the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean , the mean daytime temperatures rarely rise above 35 ° C. Together with a sufficiently high temperature gradient between day and night and the stony subsoil, a microclimate is created that still enables viticulture and in which the vines maintain a good acid structure. The most important varieties are Grenache , Merlot , Sangiovese , Syrah , Tempranillo and Viognier .
