From 1960 he was for several years 2nd chairman of the Hamburg youth publications committee and 1960–72 2nd chairman of the united youth literature committee (VJA) at federal level. He was also involved in international committees, in collaboration with Klaus Doderer from Frankfurt am Main. Together with him and Alfred Clemens Baumgärtner (Würzburg), Theodor Brüggemann (Cologne) and Horst Künnemann (Hamburg) he was one of the founders of research in the field of children's and youth literature. 1972–2001 he was the editor-in-chief of the specialist magazine "Informations Jugendliteratur und Medien" (renamed in 1992 after the merger with the East Berlin specialist magazine "Contributions to Children's and Young Adult Literature" to "Contributions to Youth Literature and Media", since 2007 under the name "kjl & m") which is published by the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Jugendliteratur und Medien” (AJuM) on behalf of the Education and Science Union .

In Berlin he was involved in the group Der Rote Elefant . He suggested the Heinrich Wolgast Prize , which honors the representation of the world of work in children's and youth literature.

In the evaluation of children's and youth literature, Dahrendorf pushed through the expansion of the concept of literature, questioned the conventional trash concept, advocated comics and called for positions that are critical of society, for example in the criticism of traditional girls' books or in the promotion of critical books about the Nazi Time. He also dealt with the children's and youth literature of the GDR. Children should deal with contemporary and political issues. His left positions met with lively approval as well as criticism.
