Theodor Brüggemann (literary scholar)

Theodor Brüggemann (born March 15, 1921 in Werne an der Lippe, † December 4, 2006 in Cologne ) was a German literary scholar and children's and youth book expert.

In 1940 Brüggemann began studying philology in Münster, did military service from 1941 to 1945 and was a prisoner of war; he continued his studies in Göttingen and was trained as a teacher in Emsdetten . 1947–1959 he worked as a primary school teacher , in 1954 he obtained a doctorate in English from the University of Münster . 1960–1962 he was a research assistant at the Pedagogical Institute in Weilburg an der Lahn. In 1962 he was appointed associate professor at the PH Rhineland , Dept. Cologne; In 1970 he was appointed to the chair for German language and literature there, in 1980 transferred to the University of Cologne as a professorship with the denomination “focus on children's and youth literature” and in 1986 he retired.

In the mid-1970s he founded the “Research Project History of Children's and Youth Literature”, and in 1985 the “Research Center for Children's and Youth Literature Research”. He initiated the handbook for children's and youth literature ; In 1995 he handed over his private collection of historical books for children and young people to the picture book museum Burg Wissem in Troisdorf . He was a member of the main jury for the German Youth Book Prize 1963–1966; 1976 founding member of the German Academy for Children and Youth Literature in Volkach , 1984 he co-founded the Rheinische Kinderbuchgesellschaft in Cologne.
