Mammillaria pottsii is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet pottsii honors John Potts, the director of the mint in Chihuahua, who discovered the species.

description

Mammillaria pottsii grows from the base or branching along the shoots. The cylindrical, blue-green shoots are up to 20 centimeters high and 2.5 to 3 centimeters in diameter. The conical-shaped warts have no milky juice . The axillae are somewhat woolly. The stiff, basal thickened mostly 7  central spines are spread out and curved and brown to bluish-black in color. They become 0.4 to 1.2 inches long. The top one is strongly curved or protruding. The 30 to 45 radial spines are interlocking, white, straight and 0.3 to 0.5 inches long.

The flowers that do not open wide are brownish red. They are 1 to 1.5 inches long and also large in diameter. The red fruits contain black to blackish brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria pottsii is common in the US state of Texas and the Mexican states of Chihuahua , Coahuila , Durango , Nuevo León , San Luis Potosí, and Zacatecas .

It was first described in 1850 by Frederick Scheer in Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dycks Cacteae in horto Dyckensi cultae anno 1849 .

(1951, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4), Leptocladodida leona (Poselg.) Buxb. (1962), Mammillaria pottsii var. Gigas Repp. (1987) and Mammillaria pottsii var. Multicaulis Repp. (1987).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
