Education

Manaia has a primary school. It was founded in 1882 with the name Manaia School .

Attractions

The place has a well-preserved defense system from the 19th century. The redoubt was built between 1880 and 1881 at the site of the former Te Takahe , which was built by the Parihaka chief Te Whiti o Rongomai . The 35 m high wooden watchtower was destroyed by a storm and replaced by a concrete tower in 1912. This and two original log houses are now in the middle of a golf course. Trenches surrounded the tower and log houses. The facility could accommodate about 160 defenders.

On the road from Manaia to Hawera , the remains of concrete from a mill that was built in 1900 can be seen. It replaced a wooden mill built in 1882 by DF McVicar of the Sentry Hill Flour Mill in New Plymouth . The mill with the water of the Waiokura River is driven by a 4.6 m large water wheel with 11 kW power. It had four floors and was 11 m long and 6 m wide. The building made it possible to store 15,000 sacks of flour.

Sports

Manaia owns an 18-hole golf course that opened in 1905 and is one of the oldest golf courses in the Taranaki region .
