Manfred Bergmeister

Manfred Bergmeister (born November 28, 1927 in Ebersberg ; † March 19, 2019 in Ebersberg) was a German blacksmith and founder of the private grave cross museum Kunstschmiede Bergmeister.

Bergmeister trained as an electrician. Drafted by the Wehrmacht, he survived in British captivity. In 1946 he completed an apprenticeship as a blacksmith with Karl Nowak at the Munich Trade Academy with the journeyman's examination. His journeyman's piece was a baroque grave cross. In 1947 Bergmeister founded a training workshop for unemployed young people. Karl Nowak put him in contact with the legendary Munich art blacksmith Sixtus Schmid, where he passed his master craftsman examination in 1954. In the same year he founded the Bergmeister art forge together with his brother German Larasser. In 1968 Bergmeister was a founding member of the Munich Craft Academy.

In 2001 he opened the grave cross museum Kunstschmiede Bergmeister in the old workshop of the blacksmith's workshop, which has a collection of around 550 wrought-iron exhibits from five centuries. Bergmeister was a member of the Ebersberg city ​​council for 36 years and is an honorary citizen of the city.
