Manfred Salmhofer (born May 29, 1964 in Graz ) is an Austrian mathematical physicist who teaches at Heidelberg University .

life and work

Salmhofer studied at the Karl-Franzens-University Graz with Christian Bernd Lang, where he received the degree of Mag. Rer. nat. acquired. From 1988 to 1990 he was employed as a doctoral student at the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich under the guidance of Erhard Seiler; In 1990 he was by the Karl-Franzens University in Graz to work on Chiral Symmetry Breaking Dr. rer. nat. PhD in theoretical physics . From 1991 to 1995 he worked as a post-doctoral student at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver , Princeton University and Leiden University . From 1995 to 2001 he was employed as an assistant professor at the ETH Zurich . From 2001 to 2008 he was Professor (C4) at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Leipzig . Since 2008 he has been teaching as a professor (W3) at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Heidelberg Theoretical Physics, Mathematical Physics and Physics of Complex Systems .

His areas of activity include applied analysis, mathematical physics (including renormalization theory , quantum field theory and statistical mechanics ) and solid state physics ( high-temperature superconductors ). In particular, he dealt with the renormalization of Fermi surfaces and their investigation with renormalization group methods . Another focus of his work is renormalization in the context of Fermi liquids . For renormalization, Salmhofer published his book Renormalization: An Introduction in 1998 .

In 2006 he organized the conference The Rigorous Renormalization Group at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach , together with Christoph Kopper and Vincent Rivasseau . In 2007 he led the international workshop Analysis and Stochastics in Quantum Many-Body Systems with Stefan Adams and in 2008 he was responsible for the Oberwolfach seminar Feynman Diagrams in Quantum Dynamics with László Erdős , Benjamin Schlein and Horng-Tzer Yau .

Since 2007 Salmhofer has been the project spokesman for Research Group 723 of the German Research Foundation . From 2003 to 2005 he was the spokesman for the “Theoretical and Mathematical Basics of Physics” association of the German Physical Society . He is on the editorial boards of Communications in Mathematical Physics and the Journal of Mathematical Physics .
