The Mangan was a general cargo ship delivered in 1969 by the Flender shipyard in Lübeck , which was commissioned by the Hamburg-based Komrowski Befrachtungskontor . The sister ship Merian with largely the same data was delivered to the same shipping company by the Flender shipyard in 1968. The ship's life on the Mangan lasted 29 years. The special thing was that it was operated continuously by Komrowski during this time.

history

The Mangan with hull number 576 was handed over to the shipping company on April 29, 1969. The ship was a fast liner and was intended for chartering to liner shipping companies. It was used in various shipping areas in global general cargo shipping and began in 1970 with a two-year time charter for Barber Lines. The Barber Lines had opened a liner service from the Far East to the USA in 1969 and the Mangan went under the name Barber Mangan .

From 1972 it was called Mangan again and switched to tramping , which was interrupted by occupations in the regular service. Starting in 1989, she drove two years as Suntempest for a Canadian liner shipping company from Canada via the Caribbean in liner service to the north coast of South America and back. At the end of the charter it was called Manganese again . At that time, an agreement on ship measurement (measurement in GT instead of BRT ) came into force, which became binding worldwide. The Mangan was re-measured and was now measured at 11,229 GT instead of 11,383 GT.

From June 1995 she was chartered to the German East Africa Line and was back on a time charter as DOAL Mangan . In late 1997 the class period expired and the Mangan was sold to the Jai Bharat Steel Company (India) in 1998 for $ 785,000. On February 17, 1998, at the age of 29, she reached Alang Beach, where she was scrapped .

In these 29 years of travel time for the Komrowski shipping company, she had spent about half the time at sea, "circled" the earth about 94 times and used 200,000 t of fuel.

Ship description

The bridge house was in the aft area of the ship. The ship had five holds with a capacity of 23,603 m³. The holds were closed on the weather deck with MacGregor hatch covers . Besides the five suitable for heavy cargo holds with tween decks the ship had some small cold rooms m³ as universal freighters with a capacity of around 500 and so-called Süßöltanks. The ship was equipped with two combined anchor and automatic mooring winches , which could also drive a capstan head via a gearbox .

For emergencies, the ship was equipped with two motor lifeboats for 40 people.

Technical data and equipment

The fixed propeller with four blades was driven by a reversible, low-speed two-stroke engine of the type MAN K6Z 78/155 E operated with heavy fuel oil with an output of 7,723 kW at 122 rpm, which gave the ship a speed of 18  knots . Two diesel generators with an output of 350 kW and a diesel generator with an output of 180 kW were installed to generate electricity . The on-board electrical system worked with the nominal voltage of 440  V and the nominal frequency of 60  Hz .

An electro-hydraulic rotary vane rudder was installed as the rudder system. It was operated from the bridge via a route or time control. There was also an automatic control device. The rudder angle was displayed on the bridge in each wing of the bridge , in the bridge console and on the bridge deck.

Conventional loading gear consisting of 18 loading booms with capacities of 5 or 10 t, two heavy cargo booms with 32 t capacity and one heavy cargo boom with 50 t capacity were available for cargo handling, which were powered by electric winches (14 loading winches 49 / 29.5  kN , four Loading winches 78.5 / 29.5 kN and 18 top winches 21.5 kN) were operated.
