Manolete (torero)
Manuel Laureano Rodríguez Sánchez , called "Manolete", (born July 4, 1917 in Córdoba , Spain , † August 29, 1947 in Linares , Spain) was a Spanish bullfighter . He was known throughout Spain for the courage he showed against the bulls.
In a large number of fights, the torero achieved a high degree of popularity. He died in 1947 in the medical room of the bullring in Linares after the fighting bull Islero took him by the horns. The actual cause of death was believed to be a blood transfusion of the wrong blood type . His last words were “No veo” (“I can't see”).
The Franco dictatorship tried to use the popular veneration of this bullfighter, which was increased with the death of Manolete, and stylized him as the epitome of Spanish heroism and the willingness of the Spanish to sacrifice themselves. The US actor Adrien Brody embodies the legendary torero in the film of the same name Manolete .
