Manono is an island that lies between the two main islands of Savaiʻi and Upolu in the state of Samoa .

geography

Manono is 2.4 km long and a maximum of 1.5 km wide. The entire island is surrounded by a coral reef . The island, only 2.9 km² in size, is about 3 km from the western tip of Upolus and is separated from it by a flat waterway. Manono is very flat and has only a slight elevation in its center (the crater of an extinct volcano ), which is why it is also called Flat Island .

700 m northwest of Manono is the small, uninhabited island of Nuʻulupa , 37 m high and about 100 m in diameter.

Administratively, the island belongs to the Aiga-i-le-Tai district .

population

The island had 889 inhabitants (2006 census). These were distributed among the four villages Apai (111), Faleu (354), Lepuiaʻi (223) and Salua (201). There are no roads on the island, only a footpath connects the villages with each other.

The residents grow taro , yams , bananas and coconuts . Tourism is of little importance.

A legend tells that an old woman was attacked and killed by dogs, since then no dogs have been allowed on the island.

The island has been on the Samoas tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage since 2006 with its two neighboring islands Apolima and Nu'ulopa .
