Manuel Azancot de Menezes

Manuel Pedro Godinho Azancot de Menezes (born May 1 in Lahane Oriental , Dili , Portuguese Timor ) is an East Timorese politician and prorector at the Universidade de Díli (UNDIL). Azancot de Menezes is a member of the Politburo and the Central Committee of the Partido Socialista de Timor (PST). He is also Secretary General of the PST.

family

Manuel Azancot de Menezes' grandfather was the African nationalist and doctor Ayres de Menezes . His father, Manuel Pedro Azancot de Menezes, worked as a surgeon and gynecologist in Cape Verde , São Tomé and Príncipe , Angola and East Timor. The uncle, Hugo Azancot de Menezes , was a co-founder of the Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA) and also a doctor, the second uncle Óscar Jacob Azancot de Menezes was an agricultural engineer and researcher.

Career

Before Angola's independence was proclaimed on November 11, 1975, Azancot de Menezes was a member of the Forças Armadas de Libertação de Angola (FAPLA), the armed arm of the MPLA. Together with Cuban soldiers, he fought against the Portuguese , using a 120 mm mortar.

In 1990, Azancot de Menezes was one of the co-founders of the Associação Socialista de Timor (AST) , which became the PST, and a founding member of the Brigada Negra (BN), a sub-group of the Forças Armadas de Libertação Nacional de Timor-Leste (FALINTIL), the armed East Timorese resistance against the Indonesian occupation (1975–1999).

During the occupation, Azancot de Menezes was responsible for the diplomatic representation of the PST abroad (Portugal, PALOP , United Nations ). In 1992, 1995 and 1996 he petitioned the United Nations Economic and Social Council for East Timor . In 2000, Azancot de Menezes was a representative of the PST at the Congress of the Conselho Nacional de Resistência Timorense (CNRT) and in 2001 he ran as a PST candidate in the elections to the Constituent Assembly , which later became the National Parliament of East Timor . In December 2004 he represented Pedro dos Mártires da Costa , the only PST MP in Parliament.

Anzancot de Menezes graduated from the University of Lisbon . Between 1990 and 2002 he worked at the Conselho Científico-Pedagógico da Formação Contínua . From 2007 to 2014 Azancot de Menezes was assistant professor and associate professor in the Departamento de Ciências da Educação of the Instituto Superior de Ciências da Educação in Luanda . Here he worked, among other things, as head of the department for studies, planning and statistics. In June 2015 he became Vice Rector at UNDIL in the areas of Educational Innovation, Institutional Assessment and International Relations. Azancot de Menezes is also an advisor to the President of the Comissão Nacional de Eleições (CNE).
