Mapimí is a place with about 6,000 inhabitants and the capital of a municipality of the same name (municipio) with a total of almost 30,000 inhabitants in the state of Durango in Mexico . In 2012 Mapimí was named Pueblo Mágico ; Also, the location and the mines are in the area as part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro since 2010 to UNESCO - World Heritage Site .

Location and climate

The place Mapimi is located in a desert-like environment ( Bolsón de Mapimí ) approx. 290 km (driving distance) northeast of Victoria de Durango , the capital of the state, at an altitude of approx. 1300  m . The borders with the states of Coahuila and Chihuahua are only 20 and 50 km away, respectively. The climate is dry, warm and almost desert-like; the sparse rain (approx. 290 mm / year) falls mostly in the summer half-year.

The vast majority of the population is of Indian descent.

economy

The people of the place lived until the early 19th century from the ore mines exploited in the area, in which gold, silver, copper and lead were found. The Indians, who were largely self-sufficient , mainly planted corn , beans, melons etc .; chickens and a few sheep and goats were also kept.

history

Jesuits founded a mission station here in the late 16th century, from which large parts of northern Mexico were evangelized. In the 17th and early 18th centuries, however, there were repeated bloody revolts among the Indian tribes living in the region. After that, the place grew into a small town with a straight road network.

Attractions

  • The single-nave church of Santiago Apostól , built in the 18th century, is dedicated to St. Dedicated to James the Elder . The central part of the facade made of stone is remarkable .
  • Several houses in the small town still exude a colonial flair.
Surroundings
  • The Ojuela mine, located approx. 5 km to the south-east, impresses with its location, the ruins and a wide-span pedestrian suspension bridge.
