María Rivas (born January 26, 1960 in Caracas , † September 19, 2019 in Miami ) was a Venezuelan singer and composer .

Career

Rivas began performing professionally in Caracas nightclubs in 1985, but soon moved to Aruba , where she performed every night on the jazz standards show Sentimental Journey Through Jazz for two and a half years . She then returned to Caracas and released her first album Primogenito in 1990 . She had her first hits with Manduco (1992, from the album of the same name) and the jazz bolero Como lo haces tú (1994, from the album Mapale ). EMI Music International added two of their tracks to the Hemisphere Series collection , which has been published in 50 states.

Rivas has made international tours to Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Austria, Portugal, Bolivia, Panama, Puerto Rico, Germany, Italy, France and Spain, the Dominican Republic, Switzerland and the United States. She appeared in music programs on Venezuelan television and at Caribbean music festivals (including the Aruba Jazz Festival ) and was a guest of the Venezuelan symphony orchestra. Alberto Naranjo and Dino Nugent arranged pieces for her, and she worked with musical partners such as Ruben Blades , Juan Luis Guerra , Cheo Feliciano , Arturo Sandoval , Paquito D'Rivera , Leila Pinheiro and Leny Andrade . She has been honored several times as female vocalist of the year, she has also been awarded the La Venus de la Prensa , the Cacique de Oro , the Guaicaipuro de Oro , the Premio Mata de Oro , the Premio Nacional de la Casa del Artista and the Premio Blanco y Negro awarded by the Association of Journalists of São Paulo.

In Miami, where María Rivas had lived for some time, she succumbed to prolonged cancer.
