action

The thief Hector returns home from a burglary and finds his former lover Maria sleeping there. She was left standing in front of the bridal altar by her fiancé and could therefore only return to Hector. The two fall in love again and get married. Since Maria has a talent for magic , she performs with Hector as her assistant. She has a carefree outlook on life and can infect her husband with her optimism. One day when her car breaks down on the highway on a rainy night on the way to a gig, she gets on a stopping bus. In it sit quiet and disgruntled people. When the bus has reached its destination, Maria realizes that it is a psychiatric institution. She tries to make a phone call, but the nurses think she is a patient too and so she is treated like them. The more she resists it, the more crazy she seems to the sisters. When she finally gets to call Hector one night, he just hangs up thinking she has left him. He visits Maria's ex-fiancé, who tells him about her moody behavior. When an employee of the institution finds him, Hector is convinced that Maria is indeed mentally ill. He visits her, but makes no attempt to get her out of the institution, and when he leaves, Maria reacts hysterically. With that the film ends.

Reviews

The critic Tomás Pérez-Turrent wrote about this film: "[Hermosillo] once again (...) demonstrates his unique powers of observation of the [behavior], customs, myths and values of the Mexican middle class, caught in their everyday moods (...) ) at the same time, while appraising this seemingly banal everydayness, Hermosillo is also capable of penetrating beyond it on the fantastic, without any barrier to separate it from reality.
