family

Marcel Temporal was the son of the importer Edouard Temporal. In 1920 he married Marcelle Gerar , with whom he had three children.

Career

Temporal attended the Collège de Vire and the University of Caen . He originally worked as an architect in Paris, but was also active as a sculptor, draftsman, decorator and engraver. He was also known to the public as a puppeteer. As early as 1911 he went on a tour with this cabaret , but initially with only moderate success.

Temporal was the artistic director of the progressive artist groups La Stèle for modern sculpture and L'Evolution for decorative arts and crafts, established by the Éditeur d'art Arthur Goldscheider . The works of the artists were presented in 1925 at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et industriels moderne in Paris, which shaped the term Art Deco .

In 1929 the Union Internationale de la Marionnette (UNIMA) held its first congress in France, at which Temporal rediscovered his love for puppetry. In 1931 he founded the association Compagnons de la marionnette ( German  companions of the marionette ), which brought together a number of avant-garde artists such as Maurice Ravel and Jules Romains with amateurs from the international art world of the interwar period . In 1932 he founded his Petit Théâtre d'essai (Small Experimental Theater), which first existed on Rue La Quintinie , then in 1936 on Square Desnouettes . There he staged performances for adults such as La Farce de Jehan le ménetrier (The Farce of Jehan the Fiddler) by Alfred Sauvy, the opera Edmond et Calixte ou la Légende des deux amants (Edmond and Calixte or the legend of the two lovers) by Madeleine Perissas and Le Pêcheur et sa femme (The fisherman and his wife) in an adaptation of the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm .

In 1936 Temporal gave lessons in the art of puppetry at the theater for the first time, in 1942 he published his first book Comment construire et animer nos marionnettes (How to build and animate our puppets). He instructed artists like Frédéric O'Brady, André Tahon, Claude and Marcelle Quiévreux or Colette and Claude Monestier from the Théâtre Sur le Fil . The artist promoted puppetry in kindergartens and preschools, for which he turned to educators and teachers with concepts. As part of the Paris World Exhibition in 1937 , he organized the Festival International de Marionnettes (International Marionette Festival ), with thirty performances for adults and children from seven countries. The event was seen as a model for future festivals.

Temporal's theater company was called Les Bonshommes Tempo (The Tempo Men) and consisted of Géza Blattner, Yves Joly, Jean Gallien and his son Jean-Loup Temporal. After the Second World War , they gave four more performances, after which the troop disbanded. The puppeteer continued to give classes and workshops and wrote other books and articles; In 1950, a new medium, television, he hosted live broadcasts on the history of puppets.

Marcel Temporal died in 1964. In 1967 UNIMA dedicated an exhibition to him with the title Les Marionnettes pédagogiques de Marcel Temporal (The educational marionettes of Marcel Temporal).
