In 1999 she received an assistant professorship in the Astronomy Department of Columbia University in New York. From 2002 to 2007 she was associate professor at the ETH Zurich ; In 2007 she became a full professor of astrophysics there.

Carollo's main research interests are the formation and evolution of galaxies and the structure in the universe from shortly after the Big Bang to the present day.

Allegations of bullying and dismissal by ETH Zurich

In connection with allegations against Carollo for bullying , the Institute for Astronomy was closed, merged to form the new Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics at ETH, and her chair was outsourced. Carollo and her husband Simon Lilly , who had been a professor at the same institute as she and was temporarily its head, were initially given a sabbatical .

In January 2018, in addition to the investigation into the allegations of bullying, an investigation into suspected misconduct in research was launched. The professor was until the conclusion of both studies released . After the investigation was concluded in autumn 2018, it became known that dismissal proceedings had been initiated against Carollo.

A public and internal discussion accompanied the allegations. Carollo's lawyer announced that in the event of a final dismissal, he would file a complaint with the Federal Administrative Court .

In March 2019, ETH physics professor Ursula Keller spoke in an interview with the online magazine Republik of “leadership deficiencies, sexism and corruption at ETH Zurich” and suggested that the reason for the requested dismissal of her colleague “is not primary the bullying allegations, but their gender » .

However, other colleagues at ETH disagreed with Keller. In a letter to the school board and the ETH Board a dozen professors, department head inside and study directors presented their point of view: "We want to emphasize in this letter that we experienced another culture and experience from that outlined in the press" .

ETH President Joël Mesot , who had previously initiated an external investigation, described Keller's allegations as massive, but completely unfounded: “For me, it is absolutely unacceptable that ETH members without any evidence make such serious accusations against ETH and especially against the collect data from our own colleagues in an interview. "

In July 2019, the ETH Board decided to accept the dismissal request. It was the first dismissal of a professor at ETH Zurich since the council was founded in the early 1990s.
