Johann Ludwig Ferdinand von Valtier , also: Valtier de Valmarin (born March 12, 1773 in Moritten ; † March 1, 1840 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

He was the son of Peter Jakob von Valtier, heir to Moritten and Marienhöh and excise inspector (1734–1800) and his wife Barbara Maria, née von Hippel (* 1739).

Military career

After years of youth in Rouen , Valtier entered on April 9, 1790 as a Junker in the “von Borstell” dragoon regiment of the Prussian army . First as an ensign , later as a second lieutenant , he took part in the siege of Warsaw and the battles at Wola and Kapinos during the campaign in Poland in 1794/95 . In mid-May 1795, Valtier was promoted to adjutant . As a prime lieutenant on October 1, 1805, he became adjutant general to Lieutenant General von Hertzberg . During the Fourth Coalition War , Valtier fought in the skirmishes near Halle, Lychen, Waren and Criewitz. After the battle of Lübeck and the surrender of Ratekau , he was taken prisoner, was placed inactive and received only half pay from August 10, 1807 . In the meantime, on May 2, 1806, he had received the Prussian nobility recognition.

On February 3, 1808, Valtier received notification that his reinstatement was being considered. He was promoted to Rittmeister on March 8, 1811 , before Valtier joined the gendarmerie on August 2, 1812 and at the end of October 1812 as a district brigadier in Upper Silesia . From April 1, 1813 to November 19, 1814 he was a squadron leader in the 6th Silesian Landwehr Cavalry Regiment and during this time took part in the sieges of Glogau and Torgau in the Wars of Liberation . His behavior at Glogau was honored by being awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. After the Peace of Paris , Valtier resigned from the gendarmerie and became a district brigadier in Flatow . On January 28, 1815, he was promoted to major, and on December 3, 1820, he was appointed department commander in the Landgendarmerie (1st Gendarmerie Brigade). From March 30, 1829, he was employed as a brigadier of the 2nd Gendarmerie Brigade in Stettin . In this position became Valtier on 7 June 1832 to lieutenant colonel , and on March 30, 1836 , Colonel . After the death of his first wife, he married Karoline Wilhelmine Henriette Burow on December 14, 1810 in Kulm (* November 23, 1789; † May 23, 1817). The marriage had three children:

After the death of his second wife, he married Friederike Maria Pauline von Gerhardt on February 13, 1820 in Flatow (* May 21, 1794; † January 13, 1869). The couple had several children:
