Marcello, Marcello - The Summer of First Love is a Swiss-German romantic comedy from 2008 . The film is based on the book "Marcello and the Course of Love" by Mark David Hatwood , which was released in 2004.
action
Italy, 1956: On the picturesque island of Amatrello, the young men of the village are engaged in a unique custom: when a girl turns eighteen, every boy is invited to bring a present to their first rendezvous. However, the gift is not for the girl, but for the father. Ultimately, he then determines which boy will take her on their first date. The eighteen-year-old fisherman's son Marcello doesn't believe in this tradition until he meets the lovely Elena, the mayor's daughter, who has returned to the island and is now growing up according to tradition. Marcello has the perfect present for her 18th birthday: the rooster that rudely wakes the mayor every morning. But this one is hard to come by. The butcher demands something in exchange. Soon he is forced to trade with the entire village as everyone seems to want something from someone else. Marcello's desperate search leads to a process of reconciliation among the villagers.

Reviews
Chineman describes the film as very contradicting and reminiscent of The Postman .
Deutschlandfunk Kultur thinks that the film could be funny if staged more carelessly. The plot fluctuates between banal and pathetic and fulfills all the clichés of an old-fashioned folk play.
