Syracuse is located in the east at a distance of around 18 kilometers . The Finger Lakes begin eight kilometers away in the southwest. history
The city was founded in 1794. The person responsible for naming the city council, who was an admirer of classical antiquity , then gave the place the name "Marcellus" based on the Roman general Marcus Claudius Marcellus . Other nearby places in Onondaga County were given names from Roman history for the same reason: Cicero , Camillus , Fabius , Lysander , Manlius and Pompey . The inhabitants of Marcellus were initially mainly employed in the timber industry. After the Syracuse and Auburn Railroad went into operation in 1836, the place also developed into a goods transshipment point. In 1839 a rock with a high natural gas content was discovered under the town of Marcellus during test drilling. This geologically significant formation, which extends widely under the entire Appalachian Mountains , was therefore called the Marcellus Formation . At the beginning of the 21st century, due to rising energy prices around the world, attempts were made to use these natural gas reserves in the region on a large scale with the help of the hydraulic fracturing process (fracking). Further studies regarding the environmental compatibility and economic efficiency of the process are being carried out.
