Marco Barbarigo's coat of arms

The Barbarigo belonged to the richest families in Venice, Marco himself was called the rich . They had extensive estates in Crete , near Verona and near Treviso . In addition to the two Doges Marco and Agostino Barbarigo , there were a number of procurators and cardinals in the family. The family died out in the middle of the 18th century.

Life

Marco Barbarigo was the son of the procurator of San Marco Francesco and Cassandra Morosini. He was married to Lucia Ruzzini, whose grandfather was the procurator Federico Contarini . The couple had at least five sons and four daughters. Barbarigo represented his hometown on diplomatic missions in England and Flanders. During this time (1449) he had himself portrayed by an unknown painter from Jan van Eyck's circle.

He was elected Doge in a year when the plague raged in Venice. He was the first doge to be inducted into office at the Scala dei giganti . The assumption that was once rumored that Marco Barbarigo fell victim to an unknown assassin does not apply.

Tomb

Marco Barbarigo was buried like his brother Agostino Barbarigo in the church of Santa Maria della Carità . The tomb created by Mauro Codussi was almost completely destroyed by Napoleon's troops .
