Marco Sailer (born August 26, 1961 in Frankfurt / Main ) is a German specialist in general, visceral and vascular surgery . He is a university professor at the University of Hamburg and chief physician and medical director of the surgery clinic at the Bethesda Hospital Bergedorf in Hamburg. Sailer is an expert in the fields of coloproctology and gastrointestinal tumor surgery.

Life

Sailer studied human medicine from 1980 to 1986 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with stays in Milan, Oxford, Edinburgh and Sursee (CH). After his license to practice medicine in 1986 and his doctorate in 1987 in experimental cardiac surgery, he went to Wanganui , New Zealand and worked as an assistant doctor in surgery, gynecology and obstetrics as well as anesthesia and emergency medicine from 1987 to 1989. Back in Germany, Sailer began to train specifically in tropical medicine at the Universities of Heidelberg and Tübingen and finally managed a mission hospital in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe from 1990 to 1992 as a doctor and development worker for the German Development Service . In 1992 he started his clinical work at the University Clinic of Würzburg and received a broad surgical training in general, visceral and vascular surgery. In 1997, Sailer was recognized as a specialist in surgery and became senior physician at the Würzburg University Surgical Clinic. He completed his habilitation in 1999 with Arnulf Thiede . In 2005 he was appointed associate professor . Since August 2005 he has been the chief physician of the surgery clinic at Bethesda Hospital Bergedorf. Since 2015 he has been the medical director of the teaching hospital at the University of Hamburg. In addition to the German specialist title for surgery as well as the additional title for proctology and specialist titles for visceral and vascular surgery, Sailer was one of the first German surgeons to also receive the European specialist title for surgery (European Board of Surgery Qualification, 1998) and coloproctology (European Board of Coloproctology Qualification, 2007). In 2004 he also completed a part-time course in hospital management for doctors (MHM) at the University of Hanover.

Scientific contribution

In the field of coloproctological diagnostics, Sailer deals scientifically with anorectal endosonography . Together with his working group, he has published numerous publications on this topic in national and international journals and books. Sailer is also a proven expert in transanal tumor surgery , which he has further developed methodically and scientifically. He also worked scientifically on various reconstruction methods after deep anterior rectal resection in patients with rectal cancer . In addition to clinical data, Sailer is particularly dedicated to functional parameters and aspects of quality of life and participates in numerous guidelines for the Association of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF).

Sailer is a member of numerous national and international specialist societies. Since 2004 he has been a board member of the Surgical Working Group for Coloproctology (CACP) of the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV) and its chairman from 2010 to 2013. He is also a board member of the Association of North German Surgeons e. V. and chairman of the Günther Haenisch Research and Study Foundation. Since 2011 he has been a regional representative and member of the Expert Council of the Lebensblicke Foundation. He works as a reviewer for the following scientific journals, among others: The Lancet , British Journal of Surgery , Langenbeck's Archives of Surgery , International Journal of Colorectal Disease and Der Chirurg .

Publications

Sailer published around 200 articles in scientific journals and books. He is co-editor of the textbook “Expertise General and Visceral Surgery - Coloproctology”, which was published in 2016. A complete list of publications can be found on pubmed .
