Political offices

In 1993 Klein joined the Junge Union and CDU. In 1997 he became district chairman of the JU Kaiserslautern-Land. From 1998 to 2000 he was deputy state chairman of the JU Rhineland-Palatinate. From 2000 to 2006 Klein was a member of the federal executive committee of the Junge Union, from 2002 to 2006 as its deputy federal chairman.

Klein has been the district chairman of the CDU since 2009. He was also a member of the district board of his party until 2013.

Since 1999 he has been or is a member of the city council of Ramstein-Miesenbach and of the Kaiserslautern district council. From 2009 until the election to the first alderman, he was a member of the municipal council; there he was chairman of the CDU parliamentary group. From June 1, 2016 to October 2019, Klein was First Alderman of the Ramstein-Miesenbach Community .

In the state election on March 27, 2011, Klein was a direct candidate for constituency 45 (Kaiserslautern-Land) . Klein moved into the state parliament at number 33 on his party's list.

He was a member of the Committee on Media and Network Policy and the Parliament's Committee on Europe. He was also a member of the Enquete Commission 16/2 "Active Citizen Participation for a Strong Democracy" and the Interregional Parliamentary Council, as well as a deputy in the budget and finance committee, as well as in the committee for justice and consumer protection. He was a member of the commission at the State Commissioner for Data Protection.

For the state elections in 2016, Klein ran again as a direct candidate for the CDU in the Kaiserslautern-Land constituency. After the long-time electoral district winner Margit Mohr did not run again, Klein figured against the new SPD direct candidate Daniel Schäffner chances of winning the constituency. However, Schäffner could win the direct mandate with 38.1%, ahead of Klein with 36.3% of the first votes. Since Klein had been placed in a lower position on the state list in anticipation of the direct mandate, he did not succeed in re-entering the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament.

The Constitutional Court of Rhineland-Palatinate rejected the complaint of a competitor against his renewed appeal to the state parliament on March 19, 2020.
