Marek Zvelebil (born January 9, 1952 in Prague ; † July 7, 2011 ) was a British prehistorian of Czech origin. He was an internationally recognized specialist in studying the Stone Ages .

Marek Zvelebil was born in Prague, but left Czechoslovakia after the fall of the Prague Spring in 1968. First the family went to the USA, then they settled in the Netherlands. He graduated from the University of Sheffield in 1972 . He received his doctorate from the University of Cambridge in 1981. He then worked as a junior research fellow , then as a lecturer , reader and from 1999 as a professor at Sheffielder University. In 1980/81 he taught as a visiting scholar at the University of South Carolina , in 1987 at Boston University and in 1997 at the University of California, Berkeley .

Zvelebil dealt with several areas of prehistory and early history. He researched the earlier and current hunter-gatherer cultures, the origin of agriculture, the formation of cultural identity and population development in Europe. He went beyond the boundaries of the subject and dealt with linguistics and genetics . He was active as an excavator in Finland, Ireland, Scotland and the Czech Republic. As author, co-author and editor he published 99 papers.
