from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Margarete von Brandenburg (born April 18, 1453 - † April 27, 1509 in Hof ) was a princess of Brandenburg and abbess of the Hof monastery from 1476 to 1490.

Life

Margarete was the third daughter of the Brandenburg Elector Albrecht Achilles (1414–1486) from his first marriage to Margarete von Baden (1431–1457).

Initially intended for monastic life, Margarete was betrothed to Count Palatine Kaspar von Zweibrücken after her mother's death . At that time Margarete fell critically ill, decided to break off the engagement and still become a nun.

In 1476 she succeeded Katharina von Kotzau as abbess. In 1490 she renounced the office of abbess and died as a simple nun. Margaret had some land and settled in 1499 a Urbar create. The Urbar was published by Hans Hofner , it shows the ownership and income of the monastery over time. It was completed and supplemented by the abbess's two successors, and the last time the margravial monastery office added notes to it in 1658.
