Margrethe Schmeer (born May 29, 1950 in Eschweiler ) is a German local politician ( CDU ) and has been mayor of Aachen since 2009 .

Life

After graduating from St. Ursula-Gymnasium in Aachen, Schmeer studied Romance studies and history at the universities in Freiburg / Breisgau, Bonn and Montpellier . She completed these courses in 1974 with her state examination and received her doctorate in Bonn in 1979.

Before that, she had already been taken on as a lecturer and assistant at the chair for applied languages ​​and German studies at the Université de Toulouse II-Le Mirail from 1976 , where she worked until 1988. Subsequently, she worked as a lecturer in administrative French at the training center of the Foreign Office in Bonn . Finally, she returned to Aachen in 1994, where she worked as a lecturer in the Economics Department of the Aachen University of Applied Sciences in the Integrated Franco-German Degree Program (IDFW) and the European Degree Program (EWS).

When she moved to Aachen in 1994, Margrethe Schmeer joined the CDU and was primarily involved as a citizen and spokesperson on the culture committee. In 2002 she became a member of the council of the city of Aachen and was re-elected to the council in the local elections in 2004 and 2009. During this period she took over the chairmanship of the works committee for culture and became spokeswoman for the works committee for theater and adult education centers as well as a member of the finance committee, member of the regional council and the cultural committee of the Aachen region . In addition, Margrethe Schmeer was elected as one of the three mayors of the city of Aachen alongside Björn Jansen and Hilde Scheidt in the 2009 and 2014 local elections. Since then she has been leaving her teaching position at the FH Aachen.
