Ringo is the third studio album by Ringo Starr after the Beatles split up . It was released in Great Britain (USA: November 2, 1973) on November 9, 1973.

History of origin

After the release of the first two albums, neither of which contained popular pop music from 1970, but so-called standards for the album Sentimental Journey , as well as country music for the follow-up album Beaucoups of Blues , Ringo Starr decided to record musically more commercial material.

On April 9, 1971, the single It Don't Come Easy / Early 1970, produced by George Harrison , was released in Great Britain, in the USA it was released on April 16, 1971. Both titles were written by Ringo Starr; He presented It Don't Come Easy live during the concert for Bangladesh . The following year, the single Back Off Boogaloo / Blindman was released on March 17, 1972 in Great Britain (USA: March 20, 1972); again there were two Ringo-Starr compositions, with George Harrison also producing the A-side. The B-side : Blindman was produced by Ringo Starr and Klaus Voormann . In November 1972 the album Tommy - As Performed by the London Symphony Orchestra & Chamber Choir with The Who and Various Artists was released, in which Ringo Starr sang the songs Fiddle About and Tommy's Holiday Camp as Uncle Ernie .

For his first pop-oriented album, Ringo Starr chose Richard Perry as producer. Perry had arranged a track for the album Sentimental Journey , and during the recording of Harry Nilsson's album Son of Schmilsson in March 1972, where Ringo Starr played drums and Richard Perry was producer, the decision was made to record an album. The first recordings began a year later, in March 1973 in Los Angeles . From March 10, 1973, George Harrison was also present, with whom Ringo Starr recorded the collective composition Photograph as well as the - until then unpublished - Harrison compositions Sunshine Life For Me (Sail Away Raymond) and You and Me (Babe) . The latter title was a joint composition with Mal Evans . John Lennon left Ringo Starr to compose I'm the Greatest . When the piece was recorded on March 13, 1973, Lennon played the piano and took over the backing vocals, George Harrison played the guitar, Ringo Starr sang and played drums. Only Paul McCartney was missing for a Beatles reunion. However, the bass was played by Klaus Voormann and the organ by Billy Preston . A version of the song with which John Lennon sings was released on the 1998 album John Lennon Anthology . In April 1973 Ringo Starr flew to London, where he recorded the new Paul McCartney composition Six O'Clock in the Apple and EMI studios , and McCartney also added a kazoo solo for the song You're Sixteen . This track was a hit for Johnny Burnette in 1960 . Further recordings took place in Los Angeles up to September 1973, but most of the recordings were finished in July. Have You Seen My Baby had Randy Newman on his album 12 songs published. The other songs on the album were (community) compositions by Ringo Starr.

The album is Ringo Starr's most commercially successful, containing three top ten hit singles. In November 1991, the album went platinum in the United States for one million copies sold.

The design of the hinged album cover comes from Barry Feinstein. The cover pictures were drawn by Tim Bruckner, the front cover shows all the musicians who were involved in the album.
