Bad Boy is the eighth album or the seventh studio album by Ringo Starr after the Beatles split up . It was released in Great Britain (USA: April 17, 1978) on June 16, 1978.

History of origin

Despite the commercial failure of the album Ringo the 4th , Ringo Starr decided to keep the concept and again renounced the support of celebrity friends; only studio musicians contributed the musical accompaniment, these are only mentioned under pseudonyms .

Atlantic Records in the USA decided after the failure of the album Ringo the 4th to end the recording contract in the USA with Ringo Starr; Polydor followed with the termination of the record contract in Great Britain after the release of the album Scouse the Mouse , so that Ringo Starr concluded a new contract with "Portrait Records" for this album. In the countries outside of the UK where the album Scouse the Mouse did not appear, the album Bad Boy was still released by Polydor.

In advance of the album, Ringo Starr recorded the songs Simple Life and I Love My Suit , which were used for promotional purposes in Japan and were released on bootlegs .

The recordings for Bad Boy extended from November 1977 to March 1978, with the majority of the recordings being completed in November 1977 in Canada within ten days. Ringo Starr only added two of the ten compositions with Vini Poncia , one of the eight foreign compositions, Where Did Our Love Go , was a hit with the Supremes in 1964 . The song A Man Like Me is a re-recording of A Mouse Like Me , which was released on the album Scouse the Mouse . After the album was released, the record deal with Polydor was not renewed.

Cover design

The cover was designed by John Kosh. The cover photos were taken by Ringo Starr and his girlfriend at the time, Nancy Andrews.

Others

  • A music video was recorded for the song Tonight for promotional purposes.
  • Between February and March 1978, Ringo Starr recorded a one-hour television film called Ringo . The film was inspired by Mark Twain's The Prince and the Beggar Boy and told the story of a rich pop star (Ringo Starr) who can no longer stand the pressure to succeed and swaps places with a poor man named "Ognir Rrats". Ringo Starr played a double role: himself and "Ognir Rrats". Despite well-known actors such as Carrie Fisher , Vincent Price and John Ritter as well as George Harrison's participation in the role of narrator, the show was not a success and the album did not have a positive advertising effect. The film, which was broadcast in the USA on NBC in April 1978, contained songs from older solo and Beatles albums as well as three tracks from his current long-playing record Bad Boy (Heart on My Sleeve, Hard Times and A Man Like Me) .
