Ringo the 4th is the seventh album or the sixth studio album by Ringo Starr after the separation of the Beatles . It was released in Great Britain (USA: September 26, 1977) on September 30, 1977.

History of origin

After the release of the previous album , Ringo's Rotogravure , which was not commercially successful , Ringo Starr decided to change the concept. He kept his producer Arif Mardin and co-composer Vini Poncia , but renounced the support of prominent friends; only experienced studio musicians and well-known background singers contributed the musical accompaniment. In addition, the album should sound more disco- oriented and thus more contemporary for the late 1970s. This change in style was not accepted by the buyers. The album was thus the most commercially unsuccessful Ringo Starr to date. Atlantic Records in the USA decided after the failure of the album to end the recording contract with Ringo Starr in the USA. The title of the album suggests that Ringo Starr considered his current studio album to be his fourth, not counting the first two albums Sentimental Journey , which includes Standards and Beaucoups of Blues , which includes country music .

The recordings extended from January to February 1977. Ringo Starr added six of the ten compositions with Vini Poncia. For the remaining four songs, the soul hit Drowning in the Sea of Love from 1972 by Joe Simon and Sneaking Sally Through the Alley , which had previously been released in 1975 by Robert Palmer , were chosen.

Cover design

The cover was designed by John Kosh. The cover photos were taken by Lew Hahn and Ringo Starr's girlfriend at the time, Nancy Andrews.
