Ringo's Rotogravure is the sixth album, or the fifth studio album, by Ringo Starr after the separation of the Beatles . It was released in Great Britain (USA: September 27, 1976) on September 17, 1976.

History of origin

After the release of his studio album Goodnight Vienna in November 1974, the album Two Sides of the Moon by Keith Moon was released in March 1975 , which contained the duets Solid Gold and Together by Ringo Starr and Keith Moon. In July 1975, Starr's marriage to Maureen Starkey was divorced. In early 1976 Ringo Starr recorded his own composition Band of Steel as a duet with Guthrie Thomas , which appeared on Guthrie Thomas' album Lies and Alibies .

On January 26, 1976, the record deal between Ringo Starr and EMI ran out. Ringo Starr signed a new record deal on March 10, 1976 with Atlantic for the US and Polydor for the rest of the world. Ringo Starr also changed his producer; so he chose Arif Mardin instead of Richard Perry, who had produced his last two albums. Only the musical concept of the previous albums Ringo and Goodnight Vienna remained the same; so he invited friends again to support him musically. The recordings for Ringo's Rotogravure extended from April to June 1976, the preparatory work began two months beforehand.

Ringo Starr again received previously unpublished compositions from George Harrison , John Lennon and Paul McCartney ; the latter two were also present at the recordings. On June 12, 1976 John Lennon contributed the piece Cookin '(In the Kitchen of Love) along with piano accompaniment. It was Lennon's last appearance in a recording studio before his comeback in 1980. A home recording version of the song, starring John Lennon, was released on bootlegs . Paul McCartney sang in the background for the composition Pure Gold on June 19, 1976 . George Harrison was unable to be part of the recordings for I'll Still Love You due to his own work on his album Thirty Three & 1/3 . This song was also recorded by George Harrison himself, but has not yet been released. Eric Clapton played guitar on his contributed song, This Be Called a Song . Ringo Starr added three (community) compositions (Cryin ', Las Brisas and Lady Gaye) , so that the remaining three songs are from two foreign compositions by unknown artists (A Dose of Rock' n 'Roll and You Don't Know Me at All) and a 1962 hit single by Bruce Channel (Hey Baby) . The last track Spooky Weirdness consists only of spoken words, which were processed with reverb in the recording studio , and other sound effects.

The album remained commercially unsuccessful despite an extensive promotional tour by Ringo Starr through Europe and Japan .

Cover design

The cover was designed by John Kosh. The cover photos were taken by David Alexander. The back was photographed by Tommy Hanley and shows the fan-described door of the Apple office in London's Savile Row . The original press of the album was accompanied by a small magnifying glass, with which one should better see the graffiti on the door.
