Goodnight Vienna is Ringo Starr's fourth studio album since the Beatles split up . It was released in Great Britain (USA: November 18, 1974) on November 15, 1974.

History of origin

After the release of the commercially successful previous album Ringo , Ringo Starr decided to keep the concept, hired Richard Perry again as producer and again invited friends to support him musically. The recordings lasted from May to September 1974.

On the one hand, John Lennon contributed a new composition - (It's All Da-Da-Down to) Goodnight Vienna - and suggested recording the Platters hit Only You (And You Alone) from 1955. There is a version of both songs with John Lennon singing; they were released in 1998 on the John Lennon Anthology album. John Lennon also played guitar in the Poncia / Starr composition All By Myself . Another joint composition by Poncia / Starr is Oo-Wee . Ringo Starr contributed the composition Call Me . In addition to two other so-called oldies (Husbands and Wives and Occapella) , three songs were written by third-party composers for the album Goodnight Vienna . Elton John wrote the song Snookeroo with Bernie Taupin , in which Elton John also played the piano, and the No No Song is a composition by Hoyt Axton . Easy for Me was re-recorded and released in 1975 on the album Duit On Mon Die by composer Harry Nilsson .

After Ringo, the album is Ringo Starr's most commercially successful. It contains two singles that hit the top ten on the US charts. Ringo Starr later failed to reach the top ten of the single or LP / CD charts in the USA, Great Britain or Germany. In December 1974 the album was awarded gold in the USA for 500,000 copies sold.

Cover design

The cover was designed by Roy Kohara. The front cover photo is based on a scene from the science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still , with Ringo Starr playing the role of Klaatu.
