Hans-Dieter Harig (born May 16, 1938 in Alt-Jassewitz near Wismar ) is a German industrial manager.

Life

After graduating from high school, Hans-Dieter Harig began studying mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Hanover in 1958 . He switched to the Technical University of Berlin , where he graduated in 1964 with a degree in engineering . During his studies in Hanover, Harig was a member of the student organization Corps Saxonia . In 1964 he took up his first professional position at Brown Boveri / Krupp Reaktorbau GmbH, Mannheim , in the field of high-temperature reactor development. In 1965 he switched to the Center d'Etudes Nucléaires de Grenoble as a doctoral student and project engineer for the Franco-German high-flux reactor project , where he received his doctorate in engineering in 1970.

In the same year he switched to the Jülich nuclear research facility as an employee of the scientific and technical director , from where he also carried out special tasks in the Bonn Federal Ministry of Research . From 1974 to 1978 he headed the main technology and production group at RWE AG and coordinated the operation of the nuclear power plants. In 1978 he moved to STEAG AG as an authorized signatory in the field of energy management and sales. In 1981 he was appointed to the management board of STEAG AG, where he was alternately responsible for district heating, disposal / waste management and energy technology. In 1988 he was appointed CEO of Veba Kraftwerke Ruhr AG and in 1993 of PreussenElektra AG. In the course of the formation of E.ON AG, he became CEO of E.ON Energie AG, based in Munich . At the end of April 2003, he moved from the Executive Board to the Supervisory Board for reasons of age.

Harig worked for many years as chairman of the board of the Freundeskreis der Leibniz Universität Hannover or, after its renaming, the Leibniz Universitätsgesellschaft . During this time he raised considerable funds through which he was able to initiate innumerable funding measures in the areas of research and teaching. Under his leadership, the university society reached an all-time high. On February 27, 2014, Hans-Dieter Harig was awarded honorary citizenship of the University of Hanover in front of almost 400 guests in the atrium of the Welfenschloss .

Ethics in technology

As part of the Sunday sermons in the Schauspielhaus Hannover, the Protestant Harig spoke on February 10, 2002 about "Energy supply and environmental protection between natural law boundaries and socio-political sensitivities", in particular on the opposition between ethics of responsibility and ethics of conviction . Based on the slogan of the EKD for World Climate Summit 2001 in Bonn "sun and wind - energy from the boss himself" led Harig out that God coal, oil, gas and uranium have also created such as wind and sun, and explained that, through interpretation that sun and wind, in contrast to other forms of energy, please God, an environmental awareness that does not bring about reconciliation is nurtured under the roof of the churches. In the Sunday sermon, Harig countered his ethical responsibility as an engineer to a statement made by Günter Altner to him in the context of a discussion with the EKD's environmental advisory council in the 1970s that too much expertise only interfered with the ethical discussion of a problem:

“With knowledge alone we certainly do not get rid of our worries here on earth; on the other hand, unless our problems are dealt with objectively, we cannot find better solutions. We technicians, who want (should) provide you, the population, with sufficient energy, protect the environment, heal your wounds where they have not been spared, act according to the laws of nature. Although these laws are defined by people, they have described the processes realistically and sensibly according to all previous experience. "
