The Basilica of the Conception of Mary is a Roman Catholic church in Xuan Phuong on the coast of Hanoi in northern Vietnam . The church in the diocese of Bùi Chu was built in neo-Gothic style and bears the title of a minor basilica .

history

The construction of the first thatched wooden church with the patronage of the Conception for the local converts took place in 1866 by the Spanish Dominican Emmanuel Riaño, after the Vietnamese Emperor Tự Đức had to end the persecution of Christians in the Treaty of Saigon with France in 1862 . The first stone church was built in 1881, and a larger neo-Gothic church was built between 1916 and 1922. A cyclone devastated this church on June 24, 1929. A nationwide lottery was held to finance the construction of the present church. The new church could be consecrated on the day of the feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, 1933. The church suffered minor damage during the Indochina War when the French invaded the region. The church was last renovated between 2003 and 2004 under Bishop Joseph Hoàng Van Tiem . On August 12, 2008, the church was opened by Pope Benedict XVI. elevated to a minor basilica .

Building

The architecture of this church is shaped by the French Gothic, influenced by the Spanish elements of the Dominicans in charge. The white ribbed vault in front of the yellow walls rests on pillars, which are decorated with wooden statues in the Spanish style. The three-aisled basilica has a length of 80 meters and a width of 27 meters and thus reaches an area of 2160 square meters. Its height reaches 30 meters and is flanked by two bell towers , each 44 meters high. The four bells of the church towers come from France and weigh 2 tons, 1.6 tons, 600 kg and 200 kg.

In front of the church there is a 15 meter high martyrs chapel with relics of 83 martyrs from the parish of Phu Nhai. On the other side is a larger than life statue of Saint Dominic on a 17 meter high column.
