Willprechtszell with the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary

The Catholic parish church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is a monument in Willprechtszell near Petersdorf (Swabia) .

history

The previous building probably came from the time the town was founded after 1000. In 1732 it was demolished and a new church was built to create enough space for a pilgrimage to Mary . For this a new figure of Mary was created in the high altar . The old figure probably came to Osterzhausen . The pilgrimage that then flourished lasted at least until 1893.

Building description

The building is a single nave nave with a retracted choir . The core of the building is late Gothic . The bandwork stuck in the choir comes from the time it was built. The frescoes in the choir were created by Ignaz Baldauf in 1747 . They represent Esther in front of King Ahasver and Abigail in front of King David . The frescoes in the nave from 1788 are by the Donauwörth painter Joseph Anton Wunder. The main painting shows the visit of Mary to her base Elisabeth. The painting above the organ shows the Assumption of Mary . The smaller, mostly monochrome frescoes from 1920 are about the secrets of the rosary and are by the Haugg brothers from Ottobeuren . The nave was stuccoed in 1919 by the Fritz Wirth company from Augsburg .
