history

The immigration of Silesian and Bohemian industrial worker families around the middle of the 19th century brought back Catholic life in Zittau. The parish was established in 1873. In favor of the construction of the church, the Bautzen chapter abolished a canon position. The foundation stone of the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was laid in 1883 and the consecration on September 29, 1890.

The church survived the Second World War undamaged. In the early 1970s, the interior was redesigned according to the specifications of the Second Vatican Council . An extensive renovation lasting several years was completed in 2006.

Furnishing

Most of the original stained glass windows with scenes from the Gospel have been preserved.

The organ was completely renewed in 2006 by the company Jehmlich Orgelbau Dresden from its original condition.

The magnificent tabernacle in the main altar is a gift from Pope Leo XIII. and shows a golden monstrance inside, which is worshiped by two angels.

The pulpit comes from Robert Schulze. The pulpit rests on black marble columns and shows reliefs carved in sandstone with the symbols of the four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

On the east wall there is a statue of Mary by Franz Schwarz , which once adorned the associated side altar. The statue is made of French limestone and is crowned by a gold-plated crown, which the former parish priest Peter Dluhosch had made as thanks for his time in the parish.

Opposite the figure of the Madonna is a statue of the Sacred Heart, carved from linden wood, which was made in Tyrol in the 19th century.

At the eastern end of the north aisle there is a statue of St. Joseph, also made of limestone and made by Franz Schwarz . It too once belonged to an altar, which was dismantled after the Second Vatican Council .

There are 14 stations of the cross on the walls . These are high-relief pictures made of linden wood, which are colored and depict the story of the suffering and death of Jesus in the Nazarene style.

A sculpture of St. John of Nepomuk is attached to a wall in the left aisle , which was made during the second half of the 18th century and left to the community at the beginning of this century.
